Canon: Final Fantasy VI
Canon point: After being sentenced to death, before meeting Locke and The Returners
Age: 18

Personality: Celes tends to be emotionally closed off to most people save a precious few that have gained her trust, respect, and/or affection, such as Cid (the researcher who raised her), and Leo (the oldest of the three generals, and likely someone Celes looked up to as a model soldier). She has a strong sense of duty and loyalty, but she's not so dedicated to her position that she's blind to the moral implications of what the Empire is doing. Though she can be cold, merciless, and absolutely capable on the battlefield, she has a strong conscience, and her objections to the Empire's methods, particularly Kefka's, are what resulted in Celes being branded as a traitor and sentenced to death.

Though she's slow to warm up to others, it isn't impossible. Most are offput by her brisk no-nonsense attitude, such as when she harshly rejects Edgar's attempts to flirt with her, but she's also gutsy, clever, and fearless. She allows herself to be kidnapped by Setzer, for example, and tricks him into helping their cause by using a two-headed coin. She was a remarkable general, talented and capable. Though the game doesn't state how old she was when she received this rank, she's eighteen when the game begins, and it implies she's served at the Emperor's side for quite some time. She likely became a general as early as 16 or 17 years of age.

Celes is accustomed to being treated as a soldier, with professional respect and obedience. When Locke later rescues her from her cell, she's genuinely surprised by his bold claim that he intends to protect her, and somewhat touched as well. Kindness and genuine warmth are the quickest way to thaw her icy exterior and leave a strong impression on her as well.

Because of her upbringing, Celes's interactions with anyone outside of the Imperial army was extremely limited, resulting in stunted social skills. She has a difficult time expressing her feelings to others, whether she's hurt (such as her perpetual silence after Locke questions her loyalty and tries to apologize), or if she cares deeply for someone (she never does tell Locke that she has feelings for him). Though she's fairly thick-skinned and cool-tempered, she can become flustered with ridiculous ease, such as when it's suggested that she pose as an opera singer to lure Setzer to their side. And when she loses someone she cares for, it hits her hard -- if Cid dies from a diet of bad quality fish, Celes gives up all hope and throws herself off of a cliff in an attempt to commit suicide.

CRAU: N/A
Skills and attributes: As a Runic Knight, Celes is gifted with both magic and combat ability. Given that she's taken from such an early point in the game, her spells are limited to Cure, Blizzard, and Antidote/Poisona - the first two spells can be less effective, and the third can take longer to cast if affected by nerfing. As she grows in experience, she has the ability to naturally unlock more spells (see her source page for a list of spells she learns per level). Her most unique ability, however, is "Runic" which allows her to absorb spell energy through her blade for as long as the ability is active. This includes both offensive and defensive spells from any source. While this ability is active, Celes is unable to fight or cast magic of her own, and she must be holding a sword in order to make Runic work. The spells absorbed in this manner fuel Celes's own magic reserve of energy. This is a difficult power to nerf with the island's effect as it isn't all that quantifiable, so most likely she'll only be able to absorb 70% of the spell energy she normally would.

First person sample: [Celes's face appears on the screen, and it's clear that she's taking some effort to retain her usual cool calm. Her brows are just ever so slightly furrowed, and--can it be that there's actually a touch of pink in her cheeks? Why yes, yes it does seem as if she's blushing! But she's not smiling. That is not a happy blush.]

Some of you have latched onto a rumor that I make a hobby out of singing opera. This rumor is false.

[Her normally cold blue eyes are even more frigid, flashing with indignation.]

I don't know who began spreading this rumor, but I encourage you not to spread it any further. It was one time, and necessary to...

[She cuts herself off. Why is she trying to explain herself to these people? The facts are there, she spoke the truth, and that's the end of it.]

I don't want to hear about it anymore. Don't ask me to sing to you, I don't care about the reasons!

[She snaps off the feed a little harder than she means to. Well well, someone's a little flustered.]
